President's Letter - Dan Doles
January, 2009
Like most parents, I take great joy in watching my kids participate in high school
athletics. I myself was never a "star athlete", and yet my high school athletics continue to dominate memories of my life
during those early years, and several of my lasting friends had been sports buddies from those days. I want my kids to experience
and gain from what I did playing sports in high school, and so I take great personal interest in the athletics program at
SHS.
This year, I am honored to be the President of the SHS Sports Boosters. The position
allows me to be actively involved with a cause that I hold a great deal of passion - side by side with other parents who share
the same purpose. The SHS Sports Boosters (SB) is a parent group whose mission is to raise funds to support the sports
program at our school. SHS SB's funds go to help pay for a variety of expenses including coaches, trainers, officials,
uniforms, equipment, strength and conditioning coaches, and league fees, etc. The current economic downturn has greatly
affected the organization's ability to meet its financial objective, and as result, a new sports fee structure was introduced
recently and all athletic families are asked to step up to fill the gap (of over $50,000). This money will allow Peter - our
athletic director - and his team to continue with the department's goal for the year. I personally believe program cuts should
be our last resort and I ask you to share in that vision with me and my board members, as well as the rest of the SHS families
who have joined the SB. If you would like more information about membership in the SHS Sports Boosters, please feel free to
contact me at ddoles2@yahoo.com. This is my personal invitation to you to take part in this special SHS group.
Aside from the fundraisers, this Falcons Sports News is another one of
many ways that the SHS Sports Boosters contribute to building the athletic program at our school. As Peter mentioned
in his letter, SB believes that communication is fundamental to the program and via this newsletter we intend to keep you
informed of notable SHS sports news as well as to celebrate our athletes' successes - and there are so many of them (see Fall
Sports Summary).
Finally, please join me for the Crab Feed scheduled for January 31, 2009.
It's our first major fundraiser for the new year and we welcome you to make it a big bang to kick off the year.
Go Falcons!
